ACEMFS SIGNS MOU, AWARDS GRANTS TO KUNU ZAKI PROCESSORS UNDER EU-UPRISE PROJECT

In a landmark move to advance food safety and improve livelihoods within local communities, the African Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin and Food Safety (ACEMFS), Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and awarded grants to two Kunu Zaki processors and their value chain partners. The initiative forms part of the broader EU-AU Partnership for Resilient, Inclusive, and Safe Food Systems for Everyone (UP-RISE) project.

The event, held on Friday, May 23, 2025, at the ACEMFS Building Complex in Minna, follows the award of a €5 million grant to ACEMFS by the European Commission. The funding supports collaborative efforts with eleven international institutions to strengthen food safety systems across Africa.

After a competitive selection process involving 64 online applicants, two outstanding business case studies led by Mrs. Sarah Majin Umadu and Mrs. Mary Magaji were selected. Each processor will receive a total grant of ₦5 million, disbursed in three installments. In addition, key actors along the value chain, including grain sellers, farmers, transporters, and millers, will receive ₦2 million, ₦2 million, ₦1.5 million, and ₦600,000 respectively, also disbursed in stages.

Professor Hussaini Makun, Principal Investigator and Centre Leader at ACEMFS, emphasized the significance of the initiative. “Research that does not impact lives is meaningless,” he said, underlining the project’s aim to ensure the production of toxin-free Kunu Zaki for Nigerian consumers.

He further noted that the UP-RISE project seeks to embed food safety standards, particularly in controlling mycotoxins like aflatoxins, throughout the food value chain from production to consumption. Aflatoxins, commonly found in staples like rice and maize, pose severe health risks, including cancer.

Also, speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Abigail Jirigi provided insights into the partnership framework, highlighting the importance of transparency, financial accountability, and adherence to project guidelines.

A representative of the grant recipients expressed appreciation for the support, acknowledging the credibility and tangible impact of the initiative. “We’ve heard many promises from different organizations that never materialized. This is real, and we are grateful. We will put the funds to good use,” he remarked.

In her closing remarks, Prof. Hadiza Lami Mohammed, Deputy Centre Leader and Co-Researcher, thanked all stakeholders and encouraged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity.

The signed MoU will remain effective until December 2027.
