In a strategic effort to enhance academic and research cooperation across West Africa, the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), Nigeria, has reinforced its partnership with the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, Ghana.
Led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, a delegation from FUTMINNA, paid a working visit to UMaT on Wednesday, July 3, 2025. The visit follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed virtually earlier this year between the two institutions and aims to solidify collaboration in Mining Engineering and allied fields.
The meeting, held at the UMaT Council Chamber, focused on implementing key components of the MoU. Discussions highlighted areas such as joint academic programmes, research collaboration, student and staff exchange, and entrepreneurship training. Both parties agreed to explore co-publication initiatives, internship opportunities using shared laboratory infrastructure, and joint professional certification programmes.
Prof. Kuta described the visit as a significant milestone in the partnership. “This is a wonderful collaboration, and I hope it yields lasting results that transcend our current leadership tenures,” he said, adding that FUTMINNA would present a comprehensive report to its Governing Council to secure long-term support for the initiative.
UMaT Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Richard K. Amankwah, welcomed the FUTMINNA delegation and reaffirmed UMaT’s commitment to implementing the MoU. He provided a historical overview of UMaT, which evolved from the Tarkwa Technical Institute, founded in 1952, into a full university under Ghanaian law in 2004. Today, UMaT operates two campuses and serves over 15,000 students across a range of faculties and specialized schools.
The visit also featured a presentation by Prof. Israel Olayemi, Director of FUTMINNA’s Directorate of Collaboration and Linkages, who highlighted FUTMINNA’s growing regional prominence. He cited recent Times Higher Education rankings placing FUTMINNA 8th in Nigeria and 68th in Africa, as well as its reputation for graduate employability. The university currently offers 63 undergraduate and 130 postgraduate programmes across 13 academic schools.
To round off the visit, the delegation toured UMaT’s advanced laboratory and workshop facilities, guided by Prof. Clement Owusu, Head of University Laboratories. An interactive session with faculty members further cemented the institutions’ shared vision for sustained collaboration in engineering education and innovation.
The strengthened partnership underscores both universities’ commitment to fostering academic excellence, developing practical engineering solutions, and promoting regional integration in higher education.
